After waiting three months, the much anticipated special episode of Wonder Egg Priority, the series finale, is finally here, and the reactions are divided. But this was to be expected, as Episode 12 left way too many unanswered questions and plot threads to be tied up,making italmost impossible to satisfyingly conclude everything within just one episode.

Given the way this episode, and thus the series ends, however, one can’t help but wonder if Wonder Egg Priorityshouldn't have been a two-season anime instead. As things stand now, the finale has a somewhat hopeful opening ending but with a depressing undertone, which isn't necessarily inconsistent with the rest of the series. Despite its faults, "My Priority" is, overall, a good episode just as capable of trampling fans' feelings as the rest of the series -- it's just not a neatly wrapped finale episode.

The event that set the girls on their paths is the death of someone they care about, and allof them hope tobring that person back to life through doing missions. The Special Episode makes it clear that these people indeed came back, however, they are not the same people. They are from a parallel universe, and while they might look and sound the same, they don’t have the same experiences or traits as the people that passed.

This is the first major gut-punch of the finale. In a sense, everything the girls did was pointless because they couldn’t get back the people they lost, as this was never a possibility. Koito even treats Ai with disdain now that she doesn’t know her, and is jealous of Mr. Sawaki’s relationship with her. Rika’s fan Chiemi is now a fan of some other idol, and Momoe’s friend Haruka started dating an older student. The people these girls lost have now all moved on without them, leaving them with a sense of emptiness that only they can understand.

The second major shock of the episode happens when Neiru’s big secret is revealed. Neiru has always been a mystery compared to the other girls, we don’t know much about Neiru’s sister—who she’s trying to save –except that she tried to kill Neiru. We also don’t know why Neiru is in charge of a huge company as a teenager, nor about her parents or home life. But the finale gives us the answer to all these questions, and it’s deceptively simple: Neiru is an AI, created by Kotobuki.

Neiru is the last one to clear the mission and she saves her “sister” Airu, who is not grateful at all. Neiru wasan AI modeled after Airu, but Airu grew jealous and tried to kill her. After Neiru clears the mission, all three of Frill’s underlings show up, and Neiruseems ready to fight them. However, Frill also shows up and, knowing Neiru is an AI like her, invites her along to become humans.

At this pointthe timeline becomes a bit unclear, but Neiru gives her pet mouse Adam to Ai to take care at some point, whichmeans that she knows she will disappear; either because she knows that Airu wants her gone or she might lose the fight to Frill. Alternatively, she could have decided to voluntarily go with Frill to try and become human.

Rika — the most sentimental of the group, feels cheated by Neiru and doesn’t want anything to do with her again. She also can’t get over the fact that the person she saved is not the real Chiemi. Ai probably feels the same, retreating back into her shell and leaving school to escape her past. One day, Ai passes a gacha place where she and Neiru once met, and realizes that she wants to save her. Ai runs back to the Accas and decides to continue fighting until she gets Neiru back.

The series ends with Ai’s hopeful smile as she emerges from her depression ready to fight. However, it’s not really a happy ending for her, because Ai’s essentially come full circle. She began wanting to save someone she cares about, same as when she started. She’s stuck in a loop and can’t move past the Wonder Eggs and the fights.

Rika also wants to go back and redo everything, but the Accas shut her out, so she is left wallowing in her regrets, even contemplating death. By contrast, Momoe is the only person that actually resolved her identity issues and accepted who she is, so she voluntarily leaves first and never shows up in the episode again.

On a positive note, both Rika and Ai have fixed their familial relationships to some extent, so at least they now have the support of their mothers. Should there be a Season 2 of Wonder Egg Priority, there will still be plenty of drama that can still play out.
