Now, as you can see, the anime itself is over, but what interests you most, probably, is whether it is going to come back. The fact that Wonder Egg Priority is an original series is both great and problematic. It is great because the author is not under any kind of pressure to alter his story so it would fit some original; on the other hand, when you know that you don’t have to do something, you probably won’t do it.
As of the time of writing this article, no official news has been published regarding the future of the show. Nojima could come up with some additional stories, but he withdrew from the project completely and, as it seems now, Wonder Egg Priority is truly and completely over.
Wonder Egg Priority ending explained
In case you’ve seen the ending of Episode 12, you might be confused to know that it is actually not the real ending of Wonder Egg Priority. Namely, the series was actually concluded with the Special Episode that aired three months later; a lot of people don’t actually know about that, but that episode actually concludes the whole plot. So, what happens in the Special Episode?
The first part of the special is a recap of the series and focuses on the main characters, Rika, Neiru and Momoe, and Ai. Then recent events are discussed, such as the deaths of some pomander girls. Then Ai is seen completing her mission, and Koito appears in front of her for a few seconds before disappearing.
At this point, the special begins. Ai returns to the real world, an altered version where Koito, Airu, Chiemi and Haruka are still alive. We see Neiru struggling to complete her mission, as she is not used to enjoying a day to herself.
She walks down the street where she meets Ai and they talk briefly. Afterwards, Neiru texts Ai and asks him to take care of his pet rat Adam for a while, to which Ai agrees on the condition that Neiru takes a vacation. Ai then tries to call Neiru, but receives no answer.
On nest day, Ai goes to school. In the hallway, she tries to talk to Koito, but finds that she does not remember her. Then Ai remembers the truth about Koito’s suicide.
We learn that at his last school, Koito caused a problem with a male teacher, which led to the teacher committing suicide, even though he had a family. Koito then told Mr. Sawaki to come to the roof of the school, saying she would jump if he did not. She screamed that he had abused her and many other terrible things. Then, without anyone paying attention to her, she lost her balance and died.
Ai continues to follow Koito, visibly upset. She tries to remind Koito of what they did together, but to no avail. Later that day, Ai tries to call Neiru again, but gets no answer. Worried, Ai goes to Neiru’s office, where she meets Ms. Tanabe and Neiru.
However, Neiru acts differently than usual, pretending not to know Ai and saying it is a one-sided affection. When Ai returns from the office, she checks her phone and finds that all her photos with Koito have disappeared. Annoyed, she throws her phone on the floor, causing a bang.
Some time later, Ai meets up with Rika and Momoe at a karaoke studio. They agree that the world is different now that they have accomplished their missions. Rika says that Chiemi does not remember her either, but it seems that Haruka remembers Momoe.
Ai suggests that they go back to the egg capsule machine, but Momoe insists that they should not since they cleaned it up after all. Rika insists that they leave and calls Momoe a coward. Ai, however, manages to calm her down.
As Rika and Ai walk home together, Ai receives a call from an unknown number. Rika thinks it’s scary at first, but then she thinks it might be Neiru, so they answer it. Ms. Tanabe is on the other end of the line and explains that the girl Ai met at the office is not Neiru, but her sister Airu. She then says that the real Neiru has disappeared.
The next day, Rika and Ai join Tanabe in the car and are taken to the office, where they watch a recording of Neiru’s last dream before she escaped. They enter Neiru’s room and find Kotobuki sitting there. They discover that the Kotobuki they see is from a parallel universe. Then they begin to observe Neiru’s dream. In this dream, it is revealed that Neiru is an artificial intelligence, like Frill, and that she could become a human if they followed her.
Kotobuki seems to imply that Airu stabbed Neiru because she was jealous of her. Irritated, Rika leaves the room claiming that Neiru did not even exist, and Ai follows her. They stand together at a jetty, where Ai explains that parallel worlds exist. Rika then breaks down and says that she misses Chiemi and Mannen.
When Ai returns home that evening, she receives a call from a number she thinks is Neiru. Annoyed, she throws her phone out the window. The next morning, she is seen crying on her mother’s lap and seems to regret her decision.
Presumably, a few months later, Ai will say that she changed schools and wonder if Neiru could have become human. Unfortunately, Ai says she broke with the others, but she will never forget that time. Then she crosses paths with two talking girls who have the same conversation as the last Ai had with the real Neiru.
This triggers a lot of flashbacks for her and he starts walking towards Acca and Ura-Accas. She then goes to buy an egg and realizes that they see Neiru from a parallel universe in the egg world. As you can see, Wonder Egg Priority never fully closed the story. Okay, it is an open ending and we respect that, but there are still so many unanswered questions from the first 12 episodes that an open ending was the last thing we needed.
This is why we don’t really have a precise explanation for you. The facts are as we have told them, but their exact meaning was never clarified (at least not for all of them), and since there are no news of a continuation, it seems that they are going to remain ambiguous forever.
