SUPPLIES & TOOLS:

  • 2 skeins Big Twist Posh yarn (or another #5 Bulky yarn) -- different colors
  • Poly-fil
  • Crochet hook (11, 8mm US L)
  • Large yarn needle
  • Black chenille stems & beads (for the face)

DIRECTIONS:

Click "DOWNLOAD PATTERN(S)" for everything you need for this project.

ABBREVIATIONS:
Sc = single crochet
Ch = chain
Dc = double crocket

For a 6" pumpkin:

Chain 17 in Row 1
Sc in 2nd chain from hook, dc in back loops of first ch.
Sc first stitch then continue to dc along the rest of the chain, hooking into back loops of each stitch.
Continue repeating the previous step. Start each row with one sc, then dc each back loop along the row.
Work around 34 rows until it's about 3x the size of the first chain.
Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Sew the first and last rows together to make a ring. Thread a strand of yarn onto the yarn needle, then sew in and out of the stitches along one open end of the pumpkin.
Pull to close the bottom of the pumpkin. Knot and trim the strand of yarn.
Stuff the pumpkin firmly with filling. Thread another strand of yarn onto the yarn needle and sew the open end of the pumpkin closed. Pull the strand to close the top of the pumpkin, then knot. Draw the needle through the center of the pumpkin from the top to the bottom. Pull tightly to shape the pumpkin. Knot and trim the strand.
Use a different color yarn for the stem. Sc 10 in first chain then dc back to the beginning. The chain will naturally curl. Cut off a few extra inches to tie the stem to the top of the pumpkin in the center.
Add a face using black beads and either black yarn or black chenille stems for a smile.

JOANN HACKS:

  • The final pumpkin will measure around 2/3 the width of the initial chain. If you want a larger or smaller pumpkin, adjust the size of the chain at the beginning of your craft.
